I noticed this in the closings of the show Limitless on Netflix in VR – the title is in a thin black font slowly scaling up on a white background, and the long stems noticeably change perceived thickness.

Yes, the libswscale library (on which the scale filter is based) was designed way before that. Try out the zscale filter utilizing the zimg library (https://github.com/sekrit-twc/zimg ), that should give better results.

For the record, though, zimg is much more pedantic regarding knowing input/output colorspace parameters. And it will throw a weird error about not finding a path between input and output if things are left undefined/unset.
