2/ We were protesting the war, music was acid rock, drugs were rampant except of course birth control pills. We protested and in 68 pills were legalized for single women. Adoption was frequent and very profitable for the religious groups who ran agencies and the lawyers.

3/ We were demoralized on every front. In college I lost my best friend who let her preacher talk her out of a 28 week vaginal forced delivery. She had toxemia and 10 days later died from that choice leaving her husband and 2 kids. They buried them together. Mom and baby.

4/ We were protesting the War, King had been assinated Robert Kennedy was too. They shot protestors at Kent State for God's sake! We protested more. I personally lost 2 cousins in Nam. Women had to fight just for everything.

5/ In 1973 Roe v Wade made abortion legal and Watergate was upon us. 1974 Nixon resigned then Ford pardoned him. In essence from 1965 to 1974 were hard fought years on every level. In Alabama we had Wallace who had been so racist that we lived in areas patrolled by gunmen.

6/ Civil rights was serious and ongoing. I had black friends who were scared to walk to the bus stop. All in all my young life was hard but I learned to stand up and speak my mind. I learned to fight and protest. I thought that this country was better now.

7/ Over the years I have voted for the candidate not the party. But now I am seeing babies in cages, the return of the KKK and women's rights, civil rights, the environment, voting rights, and war hawks coming back. Only this time it's Russian.

8/ America we have one hell of a big mess. A president who is clueless, a Wallace want to be for Attorney General, an EPA director who is attempting to destroy our environment and an education secretary who is dumbing our kids down. I can only pray and work to elect democrats.

9/ At least it will be stable. But it just is my prayer that somehow America learns to love each other and stand together. It's not us against them when them are Americans. We are the melting pot where people from all nations come together to create a better life.

10/ I bet not 1 of you isn't from immigrants. It's our community of multiple countries with multiple views that has helped us be the best. It doesn't matter what you do its that you do your best. Success is happy, money isn't. America is not following our ideals. Wake up!

11/ it's apparently going to be us who have to stand up again. I'm not a kid but I can promise you I won't let my country go down without a fight. Trump is the manchurian candidate and is bankrupting us. If it were only money! But this country needs us! Fight back! Please!

Great thread and we could add that in 1960s women couldn’t get credit cards in their own names only if their husband signed for it. Couldn’t get the pill for medical reasons unless husband said it was OK.
-
We also couldn't have a bank account, buy a car or house, and we're fired for being pregnant.
-
My first real job at 18 years old, I had to submit to a vaginal exam to prove I wasn’t pregnant before they would hire me.
-
This takes my breath away. I am 38 and I am realizing now how much I have taken for granted.
-
I was told I could be a teller trainee in a bank. I had an honors degree in Economics. I had applied for management trainee but they said women were unreliable because we could have a child or leave. I'm like WHAT! Men do those things too.

My Mom said don’t tell anyone U can type, no matter what you have the talent for, if they know you can type you’ll be put in a typing pool. If they don’t know you can type, they’ll find “something” for you to do. That 1 tidbit gave me a better career than I could’ve hoped for.
-
thank you, all of you, for fighting back to make a fairer world for my generation. I promise we’ll fight to protect your legacy. thank you thank you thank you.
-
You’re welcome! All we want is a better future for you. We want our “daughters” to have every opportunity for self determination. To have control over your bodies. To have equal pay for equal work. To be listened to & valued. Not dismissed because you happen to be female. Respect

Would you say things were worse than or now? What your story does is give me hope that we can turn things around. But this time, we need to make sure it is permanent.
-
Back then we had a crook in the White House, but we didn't have to contend with Russian bots and such total disregard for truth or our country. To me this makes Watergate a kindergarten prank. So it's worse. But we can win. America loses if we lose. It's time to kick ass!

And Nixon started the EPA, so he wasn't
horrible. -
Republicans have left the (Con)servative party. Reagan signed the Civil Liberties Act, Nixon started OSHA, Bush 1.0 signed the ADA, Bush 2.0 eliminated acid rain. Not only are the cons destroying democracy, they are destroying their own history.
-
Bush 2.0 also passed prescription drug benefits for medicare.
-
B2 started the process of establishing the AA History Museum in DC. Like someone said above, he wasn’t 100% bad. As bad as he was, I never feared for this country like I do today.
