Harvard-affiliated hospitals implemented consent procedures years before my surgery there, so I’m now feeling secure that this didn’t happen to me. But that I spent 20 min wondering? AND IT IS STILL LEGAL IN MASSACHUSETTS AND NEW HAMPSHIRE

I will certainly be asking the doctors I know why none of them ever mentioned this to me. Most of them were trained in states where this is legal.

At my school we were talking about institutional inclusion and policy, and I asked a med school professor why we don’t consider bodily autonomy as an important part of equity/patient care given the history of medical ethics & how biomedicine is central to maintaining racism.

They were in pretty emphatic agreement till I said that letting medical studies do non-consensual pelvic exams on unconscious people with vaginas isn’t that far removed from what happened to Henrietta Lacks: she visibly bristled.
