My poster design for the Earth 2050 Science/Art exhibit at the University of Hull. It depicts an over-urbanised Japan which is struggling to cope with the effects of climate change and the increasing issue of piling e-waste.

Here's an interesting question: Do you prefer traditional or digital ? Personally I like doing both but it might be different for other people. :-)

Nightjar (2019) - I make my digital illustrations using an iPad Pro, Apple pencil + Procreate for anyone wondering. Why do I use iPad? Just because it makes the process far more enjoyable than using the Wacom options and it gives me the freedom to make stuff on the go.

I recently finished a bunch of scientific illustration commissions for ARUP Group including this Small Heath Butterfly. Usually I draw insects traditionally but I had so much fun creating this using my iPad. Love the end result too!

Been drawing sea creatures from the EV Nautilus livestreams, like this cute octopus that I drew on the train yesterday! Can't wait for them to be done. 😃

[admin-jb] Since we've had almost no new applications for curators, the account will be on hiatus until September. Hopefully we'll see some more applications over the summer. We can't run this account without you.

another evergreen champ is Rhododendron tomentosum (northern Labrador tea). during my summer stints at Toolik, we saw outbreaks of orange patches on their leaves. upon further microscope inspection, we found fungal spores, although we weren't sure which type.

those were just our major deciduous shrubs though. we also have team evergreen around Toolik as well. one such evergreen is Vaccinium vitis-idaea (aka lingonberry), which produces edible (& tasty) fruits.

Salix pulchra (a willow plant) is another major shrub species around the Toolik Lake . shrub expansion in ecosystems can have consequences on carbon flux, albedo effect, etc. etc., so definitely something we were interested in monitoring!

another plant of interest was betula nana (aka dwarf birch). as the arctic becomes warmer, it's gotten a heck of a lot shrubbier, which means we see more dwarf birches & willow trees in northern regions.

we wanted to show the major players (species) in tussock tundra compositions. this includes Eriophorum vaginatum (aka tussock cottongrass). here's my rendition vs. them in full bloom in the wild (& the helicopter we took to see them!)

one fun aspect of being a scientist & artist is that I've routinely designed a t-shirt for each lab I've worked in. this shot was taken at the LTER Toolik Lake in Arctic Alaska when I was working in a team (, , & )to study ecotypes of arctic cottongrass.

okay, last of the day. this itty bitty is Mycena adonis, or the scarlet bonnet. they thrive in acidic environments and can be found in conifer forests or peat bogs.
