Interstellar 2I/Borisov reaches perihelion today: the closest it will be to our sun... ever. Contrary to my earlier tweet, closest approach to earth will be on December 28. (Thanks for spotting a big booboo in my previous tweet) See

Great article about interstellar visitors. A bit dismissive about the cool stuff we already learned from ‘Oumuamua, e.g. that it is accelerating away from the sun. But mentions at the end. The excitement grows!

If we're very lucky, our mission could encounter a body from another star system. More on these interstellar wanderers here, with input from our team members , Karen Meech, & Matthew Knight...

The latest JPL Horizons orbit update by Davide Farnocchia with solution date 2019-Nov-19 11:40:51 for 2I/Borisov specifies values for nongravitational parameters A1, A2, and A3 and perihelion offset DT. These inputs should improve calculations for where 2I came from.

Interstellar comet 2I/Borisov on 2019-Nov-02 11:12:05 UTC is brightening and has a short stubby dust tail toward the northwest. 2I is 36 days away from perihelion passage

McKay et al. (sub'd) report detection of [O I] 6300Å in , on Oct 11 with ARCES/APO at airmass ~2. This is a tricky one, line so close to the spectral feature of water in Earth's atmosphere... Infers H2O production rate of (6.3±1.5)×10^26 mol s−1

If we could predict stellar occultations by comet 2I/Borisov with some reasonable accuracy the favorable time window for observing them will be between 2020 mid March and mid May wrt to the max. occultation duration. But it would happen on the southern hemisphere.

WHT and INT observations don't see any C2 emission off , which limits 2I's C2 production to levels significantly below those of et al from MMT; confirms 2I's depletion in C2 relative to CN Fitzsimmons et al., CBET 4679

*Submitted!* We found C2 for the *first* time in using the Bok and MMT telescopes, which when combined with our CN measurements (consistent with the Fitzsimmons paper) suggests that 2I/Borisov is carbon-chain depleted. (ArXiV : )
