#freedesktop #systemd mandates an /etc/os-release file that is supposed to be a list of variables that describe the OS/distro, but in the end it's a completely useless dumpster fire.

Bad news: It's useless too, because all fields except LSB version are explicitly optional.

Distro maintainers, please hold a damn summit and design+support something that provides useful version numbers as a mandatory feature. I don't care that your distro is special and only does rolling releases. Use a damn timestamp as the version number. It's not rocket science.
