#freedesktop #systemd mandates an /etc/os-release file that is supposed to be a list of variables that describe the OS/distro, but in the end it's a completely useless dumpster fire. Let's look at the man page: https://www.freedesktop.org/software/systemd/man/os-release.html …

Note that almost all of the defined parameters are explicitly optional, and *none* are explicitly required. An empty file would be valid! Ignoring the explicitly optional ones leaves just NAME, ID, and PRETTY_NAME, and of *these*, only ID has a defined format. Oops!

But ID is broken too, because @RedHat wraps the value in double-quotes, which violates the stated format requirements! There's also a paragraph after the variable list defining a heuristic for code to derive OS version, which should have been a big rotten smell!

What about lsb_release by FSG (now @linuxfoundation)? Bad news: It's useless too, because all fields except LSB version are explicitly optional.

So my conclusion is that this decade-old Makefile I inherited that parses /etc/redhat-release is the least-worst approach, because @RedHat will probably hold themselves to a consistent format for a file whose format they own. This is exactly why #Linux can be so frustrating.

Distro maintainers, please hold a damn summit and design+support something that provides useful version numbers as a mandatory feature. I don't care that your distro is special and only does rolling releases. Use a damn timestamp as the version number. It's not rocket science.
