Rorty finished his career in a department of comparative literature. I think this tells a lot about how comfortable he must have felt in philosophy departments.

It's rather a sign of being rejected by them. In fact Rorty didn't teach in a philosophy dept after PMN was published. That book made him persona non grata amongst professional philosophers.

Because most philosophy departments don't bother talking about: - race - gender - literature - technology - history outside philosophy - any contemporary social criticism

I'm not sure I agree. Every ethics class I've ever taken discussed those issues. We just tend to not do it using the continental philosophers because they're largely inscrutable to everyone who doesn't specialize in them. That's my best guess.
