Apple—unlike others—happily enjoys sitting at the crossroads of technology and the liberal arts. I would argue it's less of a waste of time than fine art is. At least these designers are powering a form of communication. And for it to be successful, it needs iconic pictograms

There are thousands and thousands of people who only update their phone in order to get the new emojis. I have seen the sheer joy on someone’s face who finally got an emoji that matches what they want. Nothing about doing this is a colossal waste of energy.

I find that the more emoji they add, the less effective emoji becomes as a ‘sign language’ (quotes are mandatory here — I personally hope all emoji die in a fire).

This is not a waste of time, they have over 100k people working at Apple, I am sure it takes nothing for 1-5 people to work on artwork. All company’s do it even Twitter.
