I agree with all you've just said, though one corrective - the CofE doesn't get money from general taxation to maintain its buildings. Local congregations raise money locally.

-
They're directly, routinely, and vocally appealing tot the UK Government for taxpayer funds to pay for cathedral repair, despite sitting on billions that they could pay for it with.
-
And in asking for help with historic buildings the CofE is not alone in asking that heritage be valued. Parliament is going to cost billions to repair. Why not simply pull it down & build a modern, fit for purpose building. In Newcastle?
-
We value heritage, but the C of E is using a false pretence that it cannot *comfortably* afford upkeep of its own buildings to extort money from the taxpayer.
-
Local parish churches do run their own buildings.
-
Yes, but to say the Church of England need not spend any of its central funds on them and the central government should is to portray internal C of E organisational structure as some insurmountable barrier to paying its own way.
-
Local parishes are financially independent of the centre. As, indeed, are Cathedrals. It isn't a single organisation in the same way that Tesco's or Sainsbury's is. That's part of the problem.
-
That’s a deliberate financial choice not a justification. It’s farcical: why should the Church of England demand taxpayer funds for dioceses rather than give Church of England funds ro them? A deliberate choice to make the taxpayer pay for it rather than look after its own stock.

4. One thing the church does is to speak out for the oppressed and hurting. It’s people work at grass roots levels and the bishops hear about what’s going on all the times. If you want to talk to a bishop it’s easier than an MP.

While I support reducing the institutional power of the Church, be careful who you choose as allies. The TPA are an opaquely-funded Tory pressure group, and this call came just after the Archbishop of Canterbury called for higher taxes on the wealthiesthttps://waitingfortax.com/2016/06/01/the-taxavoiders-alliance/ …

More anti Christian fake news and spin from humanists. Church does more for the disadvantaged tha Humanists UK. Stick with what you do well: telling everyone how much better than them you are.

Durham cathedral asks you to donate £5 when you have a look around, but I seem to remember the pamphlet suggesting building maintenence wasn't the majority of running costs. I'm not sure what else they're spending it on that costs so much.
