Walking back on narratives in crypto, whether they were established through official onchain actions or popularized through a deafeningly loud community, is a slippery slope, especially when said narratives were formative elements of a protocols initial rally.
The devs absolutely deserve to be compensated and if you look at the proposal in an isolated fashion, it's reasonable. Just think minting shouldn't be considered given yearn history and the voting of the keys to be burned, even though TIL that was not "official".
