And contrary to the @chesaboudin narrative, this is not about poverty. Note the guy is wearing expensive Air Max’s and marine layer hoodie? This is about failure to prosecute drug rings and suppliers and encouraging drug use. Radical leftist policies at work.
Prosecution and prohibition have been "the answer" for over a hundred years now and has done what exactly? If that hasn't worked yet what makes you think it's going to work now? Maybe it's time to start having a different conversation. Why do people want these drugs?
In an ideal world we'd have full legalization and safe supply, but what do we do in the interim? This kid could die any day. Leaving him on the street to kill himself isn't right.
The only definition that still resonates within me is this: Compassion is the ability to discern when it is loving to interfere with someone else's journey. /1
I'm using discern in a very specific way in this case. Discern is to listen and trust the guidance of that thing which is bigger than me. Call it God, love, the divine, my highest self, angels, my spirit guides... /2
Sometimes the most compassionate action is to simply witness as love. I wouldn't be who I am today without going through some incredibly painful experiences. But what I've learned since is that on the other side of trauma lies wisdom. /3
I don't know if we live in an ideal world or not. But I do know that none of us make it out of here alive. The question isn't when, it's how. Yes, that young man may die. But how can we know if that's his time and way to go? /4
That's great, but that young man also need to take responsibility for his actions. There is help out there, we spend a LOT of money on programs. If he doesn't seek them out and becomes a menace to society, then we have no choice but to lock him up. Jail will sober him up quickly.
