I'm not quite a senior yet (at least by my definition) but you underestimate the power of sympathy and perhaps empathy if Trump comes out of this experience a changed man (or at least appears to be) with enough time before the election.

They normally live happily in a bubble created by Fox and Limbaugh. But the debate showed their hero, raw and unedited, in all his childishness and boorishness. It was able to punch through their bubble. I think many of them saw his performance and were embarrassed.
