I wonder if we'll see a day in which it's the runtime who decides if to use a struct or not for a certain type; I still find it a bit confusing that this kind of things have to be tuned by the developer

There's a limited scope in which runtime would be able to optimize such cases. Current state of the art would be probably JVM partial escape analysis, but even there they only can get so far, hence years spent on project Valhalla.

That is awesome. Back when I did .NET 10 years ago, struct inlining wasn't happening. I had an issue open from 2004 or so on MS connect with lots of upvotes... http://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/feedback/details/93858/struct-methods-should-be-inlined … But they have retired the entire site. Seems like .NET core has come a long way since then.
