The only reason it’s 5 core demands is because the govt. wouldn’t listen. Originally it was just a single demand: 1/ withdraw the bill After a million people in the streets were flatly rejected, the next protest was crushed with police violence and tear gas.pic.twitter.com/XzvTdhqs2b

The indiscriminate use of police violence June 12th, using tear gas against trapped crowds, firing rounds aimed at heads, led to these demands: 2/ independent enquiry into police actions (which civilised countries have as a matter of course) 3/ stop saying June 12th was a riot

That following Sunday, June 16th, TWO MILLION people marched in the streets. 28% of the population, at the same time. The govt. could still have stopped it then, but decided they’d rather crack down than back down in the following weeks. So: 4/ drop charges against protestors

Coming to the realisation that this govt. that we cannot choose, cannot remove, cannot become a part of (we tried, 6 legally elected legislators were disqualified) does not serve us and will never listen to us. So the final demand: 5/ introduce genuine universal suffrage

This is how we got here. It’s not endless demands, we’re not asking the genie for three more wishes. We just wanted to kill the bill, and get on with our lives. But the puppet govt. is under orders to never let us have any stake in society, to not let us feel we have any power.

The govt. ignored what was proportionately one of the biggest (if not THE biggest) peaceful protest marches to have ever existed. Everything that has happened since is because they would rather use state violence against citizens instead of listen to them.

As to why the independent inquiry is essential, this other thread explains why with disturbingly graphic detail.https://twitter.com/hongkonghermit/status/1161149730774118400?s=21 …

The @hkpoliceforce have now shot a first-aider, two journalists, and a schoolboy in the face. The cops are either criminally negligent, or just violent criminals trying to murder people. This is why we NEED an independent inquiry. Extreme content warning: police violence photos pic.twitter.com/51jvksbxgD

I don't see why (3) matters if no one is charged for participating in whatever you want to call the event (2).

If all charges are dropped, agree. But otherwise, the riot classification could mean ten years in jail.
