Clashes are suddenly erupting shortly after 10pm outside the #HongKong Polytechnic University on Chatham Road, as protesters hurl Molotov cocktails and police fire tear gas and other projectiles.

The clashes are taking place on the junction between Chatham Road South and Austin Road, a stretch of road laid with roadblocks, bricks and metal railings.

After a brief retreat for 30 minutes, riot police have advanced towards the Polytechnic University again, firing large amounts of tear gas on Science Museum Road.

By 11:45pm, protesters have retreated inside the Polytechnic University campus, as police fire tear gas into the grounds. It remains unclear whether police will storm the campus.

PolyU Governing Council’s student member Owan Li told reporters that university management said they did not call the police to enter the campus. But they do not know whether pro-Beijing council member Kaizer Lau did, as online rumours suggest.

Meanwhile, the Highways Department is installing concrete slabs onto CUHK’s No.2 Bridge — the site of an hours-long bloody pitched battle on Tuesday. It told CUHK’s student union that the bridge needed repairs after the chaos.
