thread based on ruminations about hearthstone, current meta, etc: recruit was an enormous mistake. very few are middling - couple niche cards in memey decks, but when it's good, it's format defining and super overpowered (lackey, call)
No issue with recruit is how they designed the cards around it. Recruiting one minion at a high mana cost really doesn’t matter since you may as well play the high mana minion you’re recruiting to get the battlecry effect since lots of stats with no effect at a high mana cost sux

but in what way do you design a recruit card where that isn't going to be the case? it's either better than paying for the minion aka a cheat or it's worse in which case recruit sucks

Probably make it a symmetric Effect like aoe is now. Desert Camel is a fair recruit card that saw a little bit of play. Make the pool very consistent and at a healthy mana cost. Lackey on recruiting demons 5 mana or less makes sense to me.

Then on the flip side you have cards like gather your party which stops you from running low mana cost minions which kind of just sucks in hearthstone. Oaken summons is playable because druid has mana ramp. And now that I’ve written all of this Recruit is a shitty mechanic lol

Any mechanic can be costed to where it’s garbage. Good mechanics lend themselves to making balanced and fun cards. I’m not sure recruit does.

i'm really sure it doesn't tbh
