Might a sociologist's professional bias but I can't help but think that Smash's problems are in part due to Nintendo's complete lack of interest for the esport scene, which led to a highly decentralized and amateur scene where no one could enforce any sort of rules of conduct.
I think that Smash being predominantly an in person esport and the frequency of things like locals are the top factors that lead to smash’s problems in comparison to other esports.

The direct comparison is Pokémon - VGC and TCG where Nintendo has a ton of control. I don’t think either of those communities or their locals have issues but I could be wrong.
