I was taught to both play magic and snowboard by a girl that I was in undergrad with. Her boyfriend at the time and her had just started playing and he was leaving to go study abroad. Her and I had played a lot of other games (mainly Scrabble) and she asked if I wanted to learn
This would have been 2001-2002 ish. At that time we were playing with whatever random cards people had gifted them or they had bought so weird mix of Revised through Onslaught. I started out playing basically burn and discard. First cards I bought were a Tourney Pack and Theme
The Theme Deck was Bait and Switch which for the next year or two convinced me that Blue was horrible in Magic. I remember fights over rules since finding rulings online were really difficult and we only played on the campus not in stores.
This friend also gifted me my first ever Dual Land (that was in a collection someone gave her). It was a Tundra that I still have in my Angus Mackenzie deck
What is funny to me is that I am sure I eventually began to see Magic as more of a "guys" game in part from starting to go to stores, but I always remember that I was taught by a woman and that everyone should be allowed to play magic and feel comfortable doing so
Randomly I started accumulating cards (this was when I was in Boston for undergrad and a year after) building tons of casual decks. Moved back to California and a bunch of old HS friends were like hey we started playing this game and think you might be interested. Yah it was MtG

@potsie_30 taught me how to play back in 2013 and handed me a mono white deck but not before scrapping it for a rakdos vampires deck. After he graduated i didnt play much but after i graduated in 2016 i moved to florida and got to dust off my deck and it all started from there.

21 years ago was my first exposure to the cardboard crack we call mtg. My cousin popped out two decks and handed me his nightmare deck. It took some time to learn (wording wasn’t quite as uniform back then) but from that day forward I loved the game.
