Looking at photos and video of the latest #RoyalWedding and reflecting on the evergreen narrative of the "breath of fresh air" that commoner brides are meant to give the British monarchy 1/

I'm old enough to have watched the 2 #RoyalWedding s in the 1980s. Both Diana Spencer and Sarah Ferguson, brides of the Prince of Wales & Duke of York respectively, were meant to bring the "fresh air" too. 2/

The truth is that the monarchy & royal family delight in their image as old and fusty institutions that require "freshening" every 30 years or so. Believe it or not, that's what the old lady in yellow and her old consort were supposed to do in the 1940s. 3/

What else are the mass media supposed to say about royals marrying and starting families? "Fresh air" is the oldest cliche in the book. Let's hope the Windsors are cool with the Dutchess of Sussex keeping something of a day job. 4/

The women who marry in & keep their jobs are the ones who are still married, yo. Ever hear of Sophie, Countess of Wessex? Didn't think so. She's married to Prince Edward, the only one of EII's kids never to have divorced. 5/

She had a real job and adult life before marrying. Freud was right about two things, anyway: love & work. We all need both. So good luck to the new Duke & Duchess of Sussex--they're going to need it. 6/

One last tweet: shout out to the gown! Loved it. Simple & classic but totally on-trend. Well done, my lady 7/fin.pic.twitter.com/IHPwnljWkA
