A shaming punishment rather than a physical one, used mainly in the north of England and in Scotland between the late 16th and mid-18th centuries to deal with malicious gossip.

  2. Also used in c19 prisons - and still are today.

Surprised to come across an elegiac tribute to the passing of Holloway Sanatorium for the Insane in chapter 5 of Bill Bryson's Notes from a Small Island. Selective, sanitised even, but affecting. He worked there in the 1970s; it closed in 1980 (no connection).

c15 Italian humanist Marsilio Ficino said the Sun (hot dry) counteracted black bile that caused melancholy (cold/dry) so suggested wearing yellow clothes, sunflowers in the room, eating saffron to cultivate the correspondence and lift spirits. In Scotland only snowdrops so far.

What did David Rosenhan's notorious 1970s 'experiment' contribute to ? 1) need to contextualise medicine 2) make us beware of trivialising mental conditions 3) depersonalisation 4) limitations of diagnostic categories. Read important book Great Pretender

Holy wells remained important in largely Catholic Ireland after the Reformation. There is a valley in County Kerry called Glannagalt, ‘the glen of the lunatics’ where drinking the water of Tobernagalt (‘the well of the lunatics’) was thought to have therapeutic value.

Plus service users in NI are much less central to decisions about the provision of mental healthcare than is the case in the Irish Republic, or even rest of UK - a legacy of the centralised power of civil servants over patients and local communities in NI.

Exactly a year ago I offered a successful free photo exhibition of Victorian asylum patients to 23 FTSE companies, which a 2017 survey showed did not seem to prioritise , to help them raise awareness in the workplace. Most never replied, including

Sorry not to have been tweeting more FTSE companies that do not seem to think among their workforces is important. Semester has started and my time is not my own, but I'll be back with a few more names to shame tomorrow.

I use a cast of the crown of a psyphilitic skull in my talks on history of psychiatry. GPI or 'dementia paralytica' is an STI caused by a bacteria. It is an unpleasant way to die.

Sufferers from GPI or 'dementia paralytica' accounted for one in five adult male admissions to general lunatic asylums in Scotland c.1900. Symptoms classically delusions of grandeur and increasingly serious motor disabilities. In tertiary phase patients had 3 years tops to live.

If you ask Wellcome they say it is fine to name in full people who have been dead more than 100 years (I did a few years back and they do, in their exhibitions). My own opinion is that we owe them their full humanity.

Fair comment, but we all live with the consequences of the past (even if we do not acknowledge it) and this 'study' had a huge impact on public and profession alike, changing the practice and perceptions of psychiatry permanently, for good and ill.

Can imprisoned offenders in Scotland make use of Advance Statements about medical treatment made prior to conviction, to express a preference for how any future mental health condition might be treated, while inside? Rest of UK?

Looking forward to teaching the second semester of my 'Madness and its social milieu in England, 1560-1820' special subject with a cluster of classes on care, carers, and locations, starting with the origins of psychiatry as a medical specialism.
