Yes, it's bizarre - they were rewarded for their good discipline, and guaranteed their place by refusing to play. Although it was a risk - a goal from Senegal would have screwed up their plans & served them right.

Yes, it was so reckless too.
-
No had japan conceded more goals they would have been out Smart of them actually
-
Terrible embarrassing English on my part (brain fart, old age etc): I meant "Had Senegal *have* scored"

Yes. That was ugly. But hard to deny there’d have been insane criticism of Nishino if they’d given up another goal.
-
Yes, and defending is one thing (or perhaps, um, trying to score?) But refusing to play is, as you say, ugly and beneath Japan.

Disagree. It was a unique situation with the cards being close. Ultimately Poland laid back and permitted it. Can you imagine the outrage if Japan got an unnecessary card in the final minute and this thing went to drawing lots?
-
I agree both teams let it happen, which almost makes it collusion, which is even worse.
-
Yeah, it wasn't ideal, but high stakes tie-breakers can lead to unusual scenarios like this in many sports. It is ultimately the responsibility of Poland to try and force dispossession as they were only playing for pride.

I didn’t see the game because it aired so late here but whatever you’re describing has been conveniently omitted from the highlight reels that have run non-stop all morning. What exactly happened?
-
It was surreal — Japan started passing the ball between like three defenfders, stopping all play to the point that it looked like one of the Polish players sat down on the pitch. Poland went along — they’d gotten their win I guess. Such a diss to fans.
-
Oh come on get a grip this happens every other week at a top league in europe. Come to think of it thats how greece won euro 04.

This is not how Japan wanted to win. Nishino’s strategy and Japan’s luck brought them to the next stage. Yes feel bad for Senegal was fast, powerful and fun to watch. At the end, Japan won under FIFA rule. Watch Captain Tubasa, you will learn more about footballs.
-
Watch Captain Tsubasa? I played soccer competitively at school for six years.
-
Then you are well aware of the strategies are the keys for the victories. Ultimate goal for every country is to win all the way. Therefore, they needed to advance. I’m sorry but competitive school soccer is not same as World Cup stage.

poland was already not going through so it was only really unfair in terms of entertainment value. japan did what it had to do to get themselves to round of 16 (by banking on colombia winning also) and whether they deserve to be there or not should be determined in next game

It wasn't pretty, but 1. Japan didn't get to the WC so Senegal can advance (in response to other ppl) and 2. If you've ever played a ball sport, I refuse to believe your team never held the ball to ensure a good outcome that had 100% lower stakes than this.
-
One bad move could've cost anyone there a lot. Especially with the criticism the team already faced before the tournament. With your team already expected not to make it as far as they did, would you have done differently? Poland should've pressed harder.
