My initial thoughts/questions: 1. Why did this take so long? CME & CBOE have been "rivals" for 40 years 2. Will this pass antitrust? SPX Futures + Options + VIX in one place isn't the best 3. Would CME keep BATS? 4. Is CBOE Europe still a go?

$CBOE has been on the offensive M&A wise (globally) -stock has been undervalued for a while wondering if these two really are “rivals” since they have virtually no overlapping product. Get rid of BATS cash equities. Keep options. Tough for this to pass antitrust potentially but you can always argue CROSS MARGINING BABY!

Who could buy BATs though? Would be antitrust issues with both ICE/NDAQ. I guess they could spin it off and make it stand alone again?

Rumor probably started within CBOE. CME snapped back with what was effectively “Don’t insult us.” The idea of that CME wanted to buy them made zero sense strategically. All-stock deal —> zero sense. The market shoots first and asks questions later…

More industry concentration is not what will increase competition. I don’t see how it could be done under the new Khan doctrine on antitrust. A merger would likely lead to higher fees on financial data or am I wrong?
