Maybe the HFTs should have done a better job explaining all of this earlier on and repeating it every earnings call so the Lewis narrative didn't get perpetuated.

I don't think CEO of IBKR did a great job today on CNBC clarifying anything... said that given almost 50% of retail flow being pulled away by HFTs from exchanges the bid-offer spreads on exchange have widened so the HFTs can provide price improvement...

Imo they do take risk in many cases they are just very good at minimizing it whenever possible. To your point though they choose their trades & know when to take risk and when to stay on the sidelines.
