    Founding year of today's top HFTs: Optiver - 1986 SIG - 1987 IMC - 1989 DRW - 1992 Tower - 1998 Jump - 1999 Citadel - 2001 Two Sigma - 2001 Hudson River - 2002 Flow Traders - 2004 Virtu - 2008 Not a single large HFT has launched since the GFC. Virtu is even an outlier at '08.

        The prop side of Virtu is a lot older than that - the two predecessor Virtu firms and GETCO I believe were late 90s/early 00s.

        There was Madison Tyler before that, and EWT before that. Virtu bought Madison Tyler in 2010?, but Vinnie had co-founded Madison Tyler & EWT before, but left after a conflict with his co-founder.

        I’m partial to your list because I have worked at two of those places. But, I think you are missing a few-Akuna, Old mission, GTS, XR, engineers gate immediately come to mind. Must be many more.

        Others have commented there are exceptions but I think the theory still holds that post-GFC the HFT world hit a level of maturity that makes it very difficult for new entrants to succeed. Do you agree?
