This made no sense. How would lenders know the govt is less efficient if there's no newspaper? And how does a story about ewaste in china tell a bank a local govt is inefficient? maybe town finances are bad bec economy there is bad there which is also why paper folded. Srsly?

Given how rambling and incoherent your comment is, I'm guessing the issue isn't the podcast.

Your story and the study attributed causation when all that was shown was correlation. It is just likely, maybe more, that these cities have underlying financial or demographic problems that contributed to higher financing rates AND the financial problems of the papers.

Except if the rates that they are measuring consistently go up only after the paper folds, wouldn't that indicate some causation?

Great show. Now you need to talk to @DeanBaker13, @NicholsUprising, or @rwmcchesney about news vouchers.

I liked this episode, although it didn’t convince me of anything that I didn’t already observe. We need a sense of community, of commonwealth. Journalism is a part of that.

This podcast misses the point. Watchdogs are different from the entire package of "news" or "newspaper." I want watchdogs. I don't want inflammatory opinions, sensational headlines and political endorsements.

Giving up on my local newspaper is a habit I can’t break even though the editors have gone to the right. There are still some excellent reporters I support. Plus, I want to read opinions that differ from my own. I supplement with other digital subscriptions and online news

Shankar, this was such a well done episode! Thank you for shining light on this topic. A big wake up call for this country and the world, especially in the times of such extreme politics.
