That is, even now, the police department is arguing that there is some investigative value in random street checks (as opposed to checks made as part of the investigative process, which no one argues are not appropriate)

There's a discussion of record retention — that is, how quickly should the police department destroy records taken from street checks. Anyone can ask to see the records the cops of yourself; I've done it. You should too.
