These are intelligent living creatures you punish solely for being intelligent living creatures. They managed to keep their population in balance on the WA coast for 10 million years before ppl showed up. Then we started over fishing and suddenly they are the problem. Foolish.
-
Yeah, they're "intelligent". Half the the population is fooled into protecting a glutenous animal with no "off" button. The only remaining predator is dying out due to lack of salmon that they're all eating. Get used to extinct orca so you can have your fat sea cows. Moo omnomnom
-
It's disingenuous to call a sea lion a glutton. Anthropomorphic terms have little application to other animals- they live the way they were evolved to live. Were they gluttons, they would have died out long ago. People caused this problem with our gluttony- we over fish.
-
And the impact on orcas shows just how dangerous it is to allow us to have such an impact on oceans. You can't take from the sea the same way you farm- there are strict limits. There are time ppl simply have to back away and let other animals live in nature. Beulter is wrong.

Legal methods to remove the most problematic 'representatives' from congress haven’t worked; republican sycophants have only grown in number. I am hopeful the electorate will act swiftly to vote your sorry butt out of office.

These are smart animals - so we have to kill them? No, killing smart predators is probably never the right answer. The problem is habitat degradation that both concentrates their food source and has decreased orca and sharks that may prey on sea lions.

This is the easiest solution, b/c sea-lions don't have lobbyists and they don't vote. What about breaching dams or addressing harvest levels? The seals might be part of the solution, but you can't just do the easy stuff and not address the hard stuff too.

Killing the sea lions is a bandaid solution to an environmental problem decades in the making.
-
Environmental problem specific to the salmon is...?
-
Dams on rivers, destruction of salmon runs, pollution affecting orca which eat sea lions, more sea lions thus eat the dwindling salmon population, etc.
-
Tell me how much % of salmon don't make it through the dam. Yes the pollution is terrible due to the traffic at the inlet. I don't know why they haven't done anything about that yet.
-
I don’t have numbers, but here is some information: https://www.fws.gov/salmonofthewest/dams.htm …
-
So it's a really serious problem but you don't know how much of a problem. How do you know dams are still the main problem?
-
I don’t know that dams are the main problem. Everything is interconnected.
-
Yep its kind of like an ecosystem, and it all has to be managed since a long time ago we decided to start fiddling with it. I'd start with pollution personally, but sea lions and fishing in general must be way up there. We can only hatch so many in fisheries. :(

Stop pretending you care! You haven't hosted an in-person town hall in more than 600 days. If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen!
