  10. In what I believe was pressure by some members due to embarrassment, in 2012, the AUS parliament issued an *official apology* to Peter Norman and his remaining family, though never mentioning the actual event or moment at the games.

  11. Peter Norman died Oct 3 2006. At his funeral, USA T&F officially declared Oct 9th Peter Norman day, for all he did and risked for human rights and the civil rights movement - which was also immortalized in a statue @ SJSU campus (not far from where I am)

  12. Peter immediately retired from T&F. But when the games went to Sydney 🇦🇺 in 2000, he wasn’t offered any tickets or any guest attendance. Upon hearing that, 🇺🇸 T&F flew him into their village as THEIR honorary guest - as he was revered in their circles.

  13. Peter Norman returned home to Australia to absolute condemnation, labeled as a black sympathizer by various orgs including AUS track and field. Despite 13 qualifying races, AUS kept him off the 1972 Olympic team, where no one from the 🇦🇺 track team medaled.

  14. After medal ceremony, the demonstration took place - Carlos and Smith raising both their fists 👊🏾, as Peter sat by silently in support, wearing his pin/button. Unbeknownst to him, these would be his last games, and his career would be derailed.

  15. Determined to stage a protest, Smith & Carlos had black gloves to wear on the podium. Upon discovering that only one pair was present, Peter suggested they split it. He also lent support by wearing a Human Rights badge that had been worn by some athletes during the games

  16. 🇺🇸 was expected to go 1-2-3 in the 200m, but Peter Norman was running the best times of his life at these games, and found himself in the finals, ultimately finishing 2nd 🥈 Smith 1st 🥇 and Carlos 3rd 🥉.

  17. As such, during the 1968 Olympic games in Mexico, he was aware that many of the 🇺🇸 black athletes had been considering a demonstration of some sort, even with threats of disciplinary actions against them during the games.

  18. Track athlete Peter Norman, despite growing up during in very racist times in Australia (white Australia policy), Peter was a big believer in human rights, and had been following civil rights unrests in 🇺🇸 in 60s

  19. Had my long run yesterday + seeing it was day one of Black History Month, I was in San Jose + we’re in an Olympic yr, I felt this iconic pic from the 1968 Games was apropos. Most remember the gloved Smith & Carlos, but do you remember the heroic Peter Norman? A thread ⬇️
