Tips on how to "control" where Twitter crops your image previews!
Twitter's cropping will automatically try to focus on the clearest, biggest, most contrasted TEXT of the image. It's hell for artists, but we can use it to our advantage.. kind of!
TL;DR below
If there is no text, it will try to find a face. But without a realistic style, it will just go to whatever it thinks is a face, or just a random high contrast area. To avoid that, a good trick is to place an obvious watermark near where you want the crop, like so:pic.twitter.com/8eLdmuvjnV
This will most likely fail if you place text somewhere else in the image, though. For example, when publishing a book cover, since the title of the book will probably be big and readable, it'll focus on the title instead of the watermarked area, like this cursed crop:pic.twitter.com/LY04BBxV9H
This is another example of a cursed crop: I tried to trick the crop system here bu placing my watermark near the face of the character, but Twitter will always go for the biggest, flashiest text... apparently it understood my handwriting, so it messed my crop!pic.twitter.com/MHIZPPIngN
The safest way to ensure your crop is EXACTLY what you want it to be, is to make a 16:9 ratio horizontal image, since that's what the crops look like on mobile Twitter app! This image didn't focus on the text, because it was a 16:9 ratio, so it shows the whole thing:pic.twitter.com/qTy1b2s91F
If you absolutely can't place a big enough watermark or absolutely can't crop the image to 16:9 yourself because you want to show the full thing, you can try the 2+ images "trick" Add a 1st one with complete image, and 2nd one with a square crop of what you want to show most:pic.twitter.com/d22bwik08J
The first image will crop wherever Twitter wants to (or center it towards the watermark trick part), but the second is the one you've got control over since it's a square, so Twitter won't touch it. This works up to 4 images too of course
"How to cheat Twitter's crop system" TL;DR - Will show complete 16:9 ratio image (on 1 image tweets) - If not 16:9, it'll focus on text - Add a small watermark in the area you want the crop to be centered around - For 2+ image tweets: try to use square crops
Ah! A reminder: Twitter will crop everything differently depending on whether it's used on phone, Tweetdeck, desktop etc But the crops that are screwed up the worst are mobile versions, so this thread is aimed specially at that. Still, these tricks help with all versions ofc
