i'm always interested in the gendered response to Batman movies. they're catnip for a certain kind of male film buff who sees moral ambituity and masculine angst as markers of Serious Cinema.
at one end you've got The Dark Knight, which is a good movie but barely depicts women as human. at the other end you've got Zack Snyder, whose DC films are ugly macho nonsense, but have a legion of stans who take them VERY seriously because they're ~dark.
the Joker is (IMO) not well-suited to being a protagonist, but he's a predictable choice for DC's first ~prestige drama~ adaptation, because he can slot neatly into a Scorsese movie clone about a white male outcast.
a Scorsese clone about a white male outcast is the perfect overlap between making a film that will be Taken Seriously, and following the conservative masculine framework for a Batman spinoff.
like, you don't see Warner Bros. doing a mid-budget nostalgic Lois Lane movie in the style of Nora Ephron.
the Batman franchise is currently trapped in a cycle of Trying To Be Taken Seriously by being dark & macho, something that just isn't a concern for Marvel.
it's wild that recent Batman movies are SO obsessed with Bruce Wayne's inner pain that they won't even let him be a father/mentor, A KEY ELEMENT OF HIS CHARACTER.
at this point, it's actively boring to portray Batman as a violent loner. much more interesting to explore his role as a mentor to Tim, Dick, Barbara, etc. love & humor don't preclude serious themes, or prevent you from examining Bruce Wayne's trauma.
