We've updated the game with a difficulty balance patch and more keyboard support. Honestly now that I've had some time away it's pretty astounding that we were able to do this in a weekend! Such amazing collaborators to work with🥰 saint11.itch.io/neo-city-expre

Happy 4/27 everybody! This means.. it's been one entire year since the release of The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe! To celebrate this emotionally significant anniversary we have a whole bag of wonderful news to share with you:

Of course, I say all of this, but then if I were to put Stanley Parable on this grid it would almost certainly be at the very bottom-right, where according to my "taste curve" theory it should be roundly hated by pretty much everyone...

...in a situation where consistency of character would have been more appropriate. To be given both options, and to choose wit over character often feels to the reader like insecurity, which imo is the heart of what a lot of people call "cringe."

...the protagonist to own the world that she lives in, to actually be a consistent part of it rather than keeping a distance and winking at the camera. And for my own part, I think that "cringiness" is a result of the writer expecting wittiness to carry the story...

Basically my theory is that, for each individual person, "self-aware writing" is acceptable as long as it's above this curve. So for Austin, perhaps the issue is that Forespoken's writing is too low on the "consistency" axis for him to enjoy the writing. He wants...

...or needs to hold itself at a sarcastic distance from its own material. So if I were to go back to my grid, I would imagine a line cutting through the grid at an angle. I'll call this the "taste curve", it's a purely arbitrary line that is different for every person.

...which on its own could succeed or at least be enjoyable. The problem for him is when Forespoken's protagonist turns self-effacing, making snide comments that deride the game's own worldbuilding. As though the game is ashamed of itself...

...when they hate it they REALLY hate it. This piece from Austin Walker (clockworkworlds.com/post-cringe/) gave me an idea as to what makes this style of writing work for some people and not for others. His basic thrust here is that Forespoken has some fun and self-aware dialogue...

A lot of what we call "cringe" writing would be on the right side of the grid, writing that wants you to remember it and meme it and quote it amongst your friends months later. But it's a finicky line to walk: when people like this style of writing they REALLY like it, and...

Honestly I think fantastic media can be anywhere on this grid. For me personally, something like No Country for Old Men could go in the top left, Bojack Horseman in the top right, Tarantino in the bottom right, and I enjoy all of those.

Okay so my idea is this grid for categorizing a piece of fiction writing. The x-axis is writing that likes when you notice the writing, and the y-axis is writing that tries hard to stay consistent in its world and characters.

There's been some "writing discourse" on twitter. I don't usually participate in discourse, but this time I happened to get a thought rolling around in my head, and I wanted to try to define it, so I'll write it down here to see if it takes.

Is there a coffee grinder that reliably won't break down? I have simple needs, just a basic grinder, but the ones I buy all consistently stop running after just a year or two.

This was my favorite video game of 2022. I'm still in shock at how perfectly each level tells a "story" through its design, it'll be really hard to play other puzzle games after this one.

Holy shit, it's honestly wild the amount of work that went into this. I'm incredibly humbled, but also I feel like I have very little to do with TSP at this point. It's something the fans have run with and made their own, and that's fantastic. Thank you 💖
