And it really *is* a good idea if school actually allow parents to buy generic clothes, of the right colour, and then put a school badge on them! At my secondary school, girls' trousers had to be bought from the school itself (at a price, of course!) - ditto polo shirts!

But they're not used for that, which is the issue. I can buy each of my 3 chn 7 days of affordable, practical clothes from the supermarket for what it costs me for 1uniform. £38 blazer, £34 skirt, £8 tie, £85 PE kit, plus football boots, trainers, shin pads, goggles, shirts...

I represent so much of myself through clothes uniforms feel like I don't exist and continues into the work place. What is looking right? It has huge implications on how we view our right to judge others. Bullying by making the bullied change isn't addressing the bullying.

Is there actually evidence or studies that have shown a causative link between schools having uniforms and reduction in bullying of low-income students? It just seems like an argument that people like to think is true.

I was going to write this. I was a pretty poor kid & can't remember any bullying at my non-uniformed Primary School. The bullying, humiliation & at least once sexual harrassment came later at my uniformed secondary school & all from teachers in the name of upholding uniform regs.

How come schools don’t buy in bulk and supply to children at a flat rate as standard?
-
If they're not free, how does this help poor kids? Do they wear bin bags on the weekend? Ludicrous nonsense

Requiring non-generic expensive 'custom' school uniforms shouldn't be allowed. The difference in price is often ridiculous, for clothes that are sometimes of a lower quality than many cheaper generic alternatives.
-
The argument that uniforms are a leveller has some merit but the assertion that it's helpful to poorer parents/students doesn't hold while schools are able to do this.

Agree. Went to Princess Mary High School for girls as did my older Sister. My brother went Heath Grammar School for boys. I still remember feeling humiliated that I and my sister had to wear second-hand old style uniform because we were working class
