    I can guarantee from any school I've worked in, that one of the questions they ALWAYS ask is "how much do you earn"! 98% of children's writers can't earn a living just from being an author.

    The kids I talk to in schools are always horrified when I explain how the royalty system works, and how authors who sell many books can earn less than minimum wage. "BUT THAT'S NOT FAIR!" they often shout. "WHY DON'T YOU COMPLAIN???"

    Interesting thread. Essentially, if you’re not Waterstones Book of the Month, it’s very hard to break into the Top 20, which is dominated by the big hitters. Fair play to them, but I am insanely grateful to educators for putting my books in front of the kids I write them for.

    Sigh!!! I’m not a book snob but there is so much more out there to explore and inspire.
