Re women brewing - women brewed most of the ale in medieval times, called 'alewives'; and while men took over (like they did most interesting jobs!) I think alewives were still around in at least the 1600s. So perhaps the blacksmiths wife was an alewife :)

Great episode! A minor point: E numbers are for naturally-occurring AND synthetic substances. Thus vanilla flavouring could have an E number whether or not it comes from a lab or a beaver’s anus
