I never understood the fear mongering behind ML systems becoming self-aware. My first research project in Uni was on ML and I had the revelation that although powerful, they were utterly stupid, so I switched to PL. 10 years later, verifying DNNs, my god are they still stupid.

Indeed, they are, but I feel justified criticism and fear about racial and gender bias in ML systems also get branded as coocoo Skynet talk.

Yeah this is definitely really valid AND terrifying given that ML systems are being used in judge/criminal courts and offices. Anyone dismissing these concerns, again, doesn't understand that ML only reflects the inherently biased data its given.

I've always wondered if they really need to be smart or self aware to wreak havoc, however. Theoretically, all you need is a system that can learn operate outside of its parameters, right?

In general, any computer system can wreak havoc, if that's its intended use. It doesn't matter if it uses ML or not.

People had the same fears about expert systems 30 years ago. And with lisp AIs 20 years before that. And with general computing 20 years before THAT...

In 1949 or so Norbert Weiner said that AI (and a full understanding of the brain) would be here in 5 years, and Turing was all like, nah, optimistic fool, it will take 50.

aha for real. working with ML + watching a robot try to pick up a cup or something = laughing endlessly at all predictions around sentient terminators in the near future. meanwhile, climate change.

Artificial Intelligence is not a threat. What's really threatening is the Actual Idiocy of AI.
