Guarding myself against the fallacy of overly caring about 2020 Presidential race, when the most lasting way to steer the country in a better direction is for Dems to flip federal Congress and win in state and local races. 1/

Helps to diagnose why I fall into the fallacy: the root cause is the combination of Trump’s distinctive horribleness and the GOP capitulation to it. This means Trump has a lot of day to day salience. 2/

But that salience, while understandable, is not a good indication of how to preserve our country from a rogue President supported by his party. 3/

The safeguards we need must extend to the worst case scenario for the 2020 Presidential election - Trump is re-elected. 3/

The only peaceful way to check Trump, if he wins a second term, and to undermine the party that has supported him, is to have 1) Dem controlled US House and Senate 2) state and local governments dedicated to protecting rule of law, justice, and welfare of all residents. 4/

It is tempting to focus heavily on the seemingly blockbuster solution to Trump and the GOP, putting a Dem in the WH in 2020. 5/

While it would please me if we can elect a Dem president in 2020, we cannot let that goal preoccupy us. 6/

An interlocking network of Democrat dominated state and local governments and Dem controlled fed congress would pay dividends beyond 2020, even if a Dem does win the the US presidency. 7/

In sum: for both short and long term spreading Dem political power widely and deeply is the best protection against the Trump-Pence-McConnell GOP. When Trump angers or distresses me, this is the thought I must remember. 8/8
