I have said it before, but need to say again: Trump should have been impeached upon taking office as he was immediately in violation of his oath of office bc he was taking domestic and foreign #Emoluments. 1/

When some of us immediately noted Trump’s unconstitutional #Emoluments, we were told a) he was not in fact violating the Constitution and b) this is not the sort of thing a President should be impeached over. 2/

To claim Trump hasn’t been taking #Emoluments from moment of inauguration is just silly. 3/

To claim that somehow taking #Emoluments does not merit impeachment is downright dangerous. 4/

Apart from the prudential problems with allowing various parties to curry financial favor with the President, it cannot be that a President gets to pick and choose the Constitutional provisions with which he will comply. 5/

Selective responsiveness to the Constitution you have committed to uphold is one of the highest crimes a US President could commit. 6/

From the moment Trump was inaugurated he was in dereliction of his definitive ethical and legal obligation: to uphold the Constitution. 7/

Trump’s corrupt and unconstitutional acceptance of #Emoluments and GOP Congressional complicity right from the get go told us everything about the illegitimacy of this President and his party. 8/

Imagine a Congress that had immediately held hearings into Trump’s unapproved acceptance of #Emoluments. 9/

The first order of business of such hearings would have been to obtain and examine Trump’s financial records. 10/

Or Trump might have refused to give his financial records to Congress, putting himself into obvious contempt of Congress and possibly precipating impeachment on that ground. 12/

Less likely, but still possible: rather than get into a showdown over disclosure of his financial records, Trump might have resigned. 13/

The GOP’s refusal to require Trump to act in accordance with the U.S. Constitution re #Emoluments sealed their assent to a lawless presidency. 14/

We cannot maintain a constitutional democracy with one major political party in cahoots with Executive betrayal of the U.S. Constitution. 16/end
