So: the word "meritocracy" was coined by an English baron who phoned Oxford to get his wastrel failson admitted despite having poor grades.https://twitter.com/DavidLammy/status/999349306460123143 …

Toby tell us again about that time you got into Oxford because your Dad (a Baron) rang up the College to ask them to let you in because you didn't get the grades? And then come back to talk to me about institutional bias and why white students twice as likely to get in as black. https://twitter.com/toadmeister/status/999256518850641920 …

Oh,it's absolutely true. Baron Michael Young coined "meritocracy" -- and of course his wastrel failson is Toby Young.

In fairness, he didn’t *like* the meritocracy.

Yeah, Michael Young's engagement with his coinage is complex. But story of TY is yet another reason not to take word meritocracy literally, as so many do.

He denies this, and says he was told by admissions some time later that his acceptance letter was sent by mistake, which Oxford felt compelled to honor.
