Nice piece. I actually really like Roth's early work, even the goyische "When She Was Good," and I think "Letting Go" was the best novel he ever wrote. James Atlas wrote a very persuasive defense of it that was reprinted in the New Republic.

Roth was super-talented from the start but I find those first three books a bit too ... what's the word? ... constipated. Portnoy was a breakthrough.
