3. Peterson's preference for stagy vintage clothing is matched by his intellectual style. He's cast himself as a mythologist, a seer who discovers the underlying archetypes that guide human thought. This is something more common in 19th & 20th century than now

Your mention of Casaubon reminded me of Eco's "Foucault's Pendulum" and his skewering of mythology addled conspiracy mongers. Any words on Eco?

Fantastic article. Please take this next comment as well-meaning -- I think you're being a little to certain about Joseph Campbell, based on this NY Times article about it... https://www.nytimes.com/1989/11/06/arts/after-death-a-writer-is-accused-of-anti-semitism.html …

There's a lot more evidence along this line. The Ellwood book I cited in article gives a fair-minded summary.

Good points. BTW, the political implications of the popularity of Peterson and others like him are very important. My views on them here.https://medium.com/@upine/a-few-words-about-jordan-peterson-logic-and-marketing-9b5223c10183 …

I'm reading this thread as "Historically, groups of right-wing conservative mythologists used shitty comparative mythology to bolster right-wing agendas, and Peterson seems to specifically identify with that tradition, which has not been mainstream for nearly a century."
-
But, it's really easy for someone to read it as "everyone with an interest in mythology is a fascist".
