There's a strong affinity between myth scholars & reactionary politics: Jung, Eliade, Campbell, Guenon, Peterson. Northrop Frye, who was a moderate social democrat, is the great exception here.

If were really up to speed I'd do a thread on Carl Jung, comparative mythology, Jordan Peterson, fascism, the Indiana Jones movies, ancient astronauts & Jack Kirby's theological-science-fiction cycle (Thor-New Gods-Eternals-Captain Victory). But I need to read more.

Jack Kirby's fascination with the ancient astronaut theme (running from 1950s till end of life) was linked to his anti-fascism: it was reclaiming mythology from the reactionaries by showing it was not timeless truth but living & transformative storytelling.

There's a fundamental difference between comparative mythology and cultural anthropology, I think. The former is fundamentally reductive, looking for universal symbols. The latter is anti-reductive, interpreting symbols in as specific cultural contexts as possible.

I'd argue that there's no place anymore to disconnect a cosmology from its people, so it's more a transformative transition from one into the other than a difference, as the approaches are not entirely contemporaneous.

It's certainly a relatively recent development. I'd observe pedantically that is more likely that the study of timeless generation of spiritual world order is what drives people to hold reactionary positions than the other way around.

Georges Bataille and Mary Douglas (both quite different from one another!), in my mind, stand as good examples.
