1. Tom Wolfe is an interesting example of the benefits of reading your opponents. He was politically conservative but very much shaped by the proletarian & socialist novels of 1930s.

It's been a while since I read "Bonfire", and to be fair, many, many men have problems capturing a woman's voice. But I disagree with you. I think he had a real knack of making fiction sound like journalism, and vice versa.
