This seems less important now. I've just been told that journalists understand "off the record" means "we can quote what you say" and I'm a little miffed journalists who have asked me questions off the record didn't spell this out, because those words now seem highly misleading.

Wait, what? If this is so, I feel journalists should be much clearer about this because I reckon that's what everyone spoken to "off the record" understands it to mean. If "off the record" means "you can quote me, but not name me", what describes "you can't quote me"?
