They don't view Desmond as a journalist - they view him as an activist. You can be a 1-issue columnist about anything from environment to architecture to urban issues to anti-Muslim screeds and they'll see you as a fellow journalist. But not someone who talks about black lives

Well, I agree with that. I think actually doing straight reporting is a good discipline for young writers, and the activism can come later.
