1. What's up with the surge of people calling themselves classical liberals, heirs of the Enlightenment, & (ahem) free thinkers? My theory is that it's an attempt to create (or capture) a new centrism.

3. There's an attempt to create a new center, one that defines itself against both Trumpian right and resurgent left. One symptom is way mainstream media keeps giving Never Trump conservatives platforms far greater than their (tiny) numbers demand.

4. The outlines of this new centrism are still fuzzy, but I think one area where elite conservatives & liberals will unite is against "victim politics":https://newrepublic.com/article/148308/centrist-grievance-victim-politics …

Your first problem is to label centrists elite liberals. That’s the stupid narrative given by far left. Just like elite or establishment conservatives are labeled by far right or Trumpers.

I agree with your assessment overall, but you’re conflating leftism (socialism) and liberalism. You need an XY axis to truly represent both sentiments, which gives it more dimensionality and completeness. Besides extreme left may have been exterminated by a Reagan or Bush.
