Reading what writers publish seems...fine? Surveillance would be a different matter. What’s the problem with police reading a critic of police behavior?

The ‘police should not even listen to criticism’ is an odd stance.

"The police should not monitor journalists simply for being critical of them" is a normal stance. You might want to research history of RCMP monitoring political critics. It's very ugly.

But that is, I presume, ‘monitoring’ that goes beyond making press clippings of what journalists write in the paper about the police.

But that's exactly where democracy can begin to break down. When journalists do their job in calling out abuses by those in power and those in power collect clippings, it takes very little to move to active surveillance and then arrests for "subversive" activities. 1/2

A journalist is facing jail time for reporting on Muscrat Falls, so, as impossible as it sounds, this happens in Canada. Do I expect journalists to be lined up in front of a firing squad in Canada? No. But this is very much a slippery slope that we need to steer clear of

Saying the judicial system can’t read what journalists punish seems overbroad. Say the journalist publishes a story about wage theft. Justice system can’t look into that because they can’t officially read it? We must have a better way of drawing lines.

Read the CBC article. It's clear they are not monitoring Cole (or Black Lives Matter) for research into content. They specifically comment on "tone"? Why?

That's the impression I got, but it's hard to follow from several provinces away. The whole thing is unsettling.

why? because #Toronto police culture is racist. bottom line, culture of police in #Toronto is rotten, far too many "bad apples" bushels full of em... not enough good cops capable of sticking necks out for the greater good.
