I think that debate merely corresponds to a difference between liberals and leftists, one of which (but not the only) was about the Cold War and communism.

The question of what constitutes hawkishness was itself wrapped up in who the actor was. A benefit of the Cold War's end was that it created more room on 'the left' to critique things on their own terms, instead of everything being filtered through a "whose side you on?" binary

...which led to things like Matt's favorite Harvard Crimson editorial that can't quite bring itself to condemn the Khmer Rouge. Much more likely today to see Hungary '56/Prague '68 recognized on the left as acts of hawkishness/imperialism than was the case at the time
