I started reading Ph. T. Hoffman's "Why did Europe conquer the world" and in the first para he writes about W Europe in year 900 exporting "furs and slaves". I don't think it is true. So I dropped the book until somebody convinces me I am wrong.

Exporting slaves? Is he talking about Balkans sending slaves to Turkey?

No, about W Europe sending slaves to unspecified locations. (btw, slaves were sold from what is today's Ukraine/S Russia to Byzantium. And so was fur.)

Yeah, I've never heard of Western Europe exporting slaves. A big mistake.

Don't you know the story of St Patrick? Even before the Vikings! Or you can look at Charlemagne's conquest of Saxony! And then you have the Saxonian Otto's enslaving slavs in turn to build the HRE in the 10th century. Then there are the Avars, Magyars.

Hmm Western Europe - maybe in that time period, no. Much later UK exported abducted Irish girls as slaves and for eugenics programme breeding them in Caribbean with African slaves.
