this is why I am not Christian - my older brother is gay, and my youth pastor told me homosexuality is a grave sin. I was forced to choose between church and my brother, and I chose my brother.

Ironically, this is the most Christian thing I can imagine. (loving a person rather than caving to social pressure is the part of the Christian memeplex that makes my atheist heart love my neighbour despite my admittedly nihilistic first principles)

Religiosity rises with uncertainty and chaos. If US adopted a few programs from Europe - such as, providing accessible & affordable healthcare, child/elder care, and college for all - we should see a measurable drop in religiosity.

1) That's not what the article says 2) Probably the more likely explanation is that secularism grew earlier in more progressive places, so recently less progressive places had more low hanging fruit for secularism

What I mean by #2 is that at some point there's a transition where generally irreligious people stop identifying as "Christian" , this happened earlier in progressive places, other places are now catching up.
