The thing these twerps don't realize is that the *radical* sexual revolution lasted for about six months and people figured out right away that won't work either. My dad was (pardon my french) balls deep in it. Incels are just dudes who can't accept that life ain't fair...
Better summary: - neoliberalism creates sexual inequality - secularism causes materialist view of sex - we do/should redistribute material goods to decrease inequality Ergo, redistribution of sex (or something materially comparable)
Would it “simply” be a matter of education (battling ignorance), or therapy (treating mental illness), or de-radicalization (treated as potential terrorists?) To what degree are these people being treated already (in any category)? Is the remedy individualized, or social policy?
Hear, hear. I agree w/ everything Jeet says above, yet focusing only on the failings—therapy, deradicalization, anti-misogyny ed—of these, and other non-misigynist men at risk of being led down the same path, seems destined to fall of deaf ears. /1
Douthat always insists that the acceptance of sex as pleasure is some radical 60s idea, rather than something that was pretty obvious from cave people onward
He’s like a nerdy eleven year old who’s being raised in a convent.
Jeet, take your pt re: the elision of misigynt@broadly that extends beyond sex to submission, but how do you factor in @DouthatNYT framing of the essay, in part, by using the @LRB esssy by @amiasrinivasan (which I’ve read) which expands the subject of sexual need beyond Incels?
Michel Houllebecq started to write about an "incel revolt" as early as 1994 with L'extension du domaine de la lutte. I have been surprised to not see his prescient fiction referenced yet!
